News broke Friday, Dec. 1, that the shot clock referendum for high school basketball recently reported on by The Aviator was rescinded and will not be put into effect in 2019-20 nor 2020-21. De Pere athletic director Jeff Byczek showed his disappointment with the decision.

“I’m not surprised,” Byczek said. “I think there was a lot of schools that were passionately against the shot clock, and obviously it’s a lot easier to be against something than for something when it comes to a big change like this.”

While frustrated that the shot clock didn’t go through, he was also very concerned in which the way the situation was handled and finally decided upon by the WIAA Board of Control.

“I’m disappointed in how we acted from a process standpoint,” Byczek said. “The process was followed, it was seen to its conclusion, and then after the fact, the schools decided that they didn’t like it.

“The part that I worry about is if you complain loud enough and loud enough after the fact, then what are we going to change next?”
