Bucks’ firing of Kidd was the right move

The morning of Jan. 22 was a bit of a shocker for Bucks fans, as head coach Jason Kidd was fired just hours before the Bucks played the Phoenix Suns at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee. It comes at a right time, with the Bucks sitting at 24-22 and in third place in the division after their 109-105 defeat of the Suns on Monday night.

To me, this is a great move. Kidd led the Bucks on consecutive playoff runs, and he has brought Giannis Antetokounmpo into the spotlight as a top-5 player in the NBA. Although Kidd did most of his job, this year has been a disappointment as just a .500 ballclub. After last year, expectations in the Bucks’ locker room rose high, and they haven’t been fulfilled.

While interim head coach Joe Prunty tries to deal with a new job as well as no Giannis (due to a sore left knee) in the lineup, the search for a new head coach is on.

According to USA Today’s HoopsHype, the Bucks are reportedly pursuing former Grizzlies head coach David Fizdale and former Knicks and Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy, who currently works on ABC’s NBA Saturday Primetime set.

Those are great choices, considering the fact that Fizdale has coached many star players (like Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph), and Van Gundy’s basketball IQ is high. Both are veterans of the game when it comes to coaching, and would work well with Antetokounmpo, point guards Eric Bledsoe and Malcolm Brogdon, and shooting guard Khris Middleton.

There’s never anything worse than underperforming. If the Bucks can get on a roll (interim coach or not) before February’s All-Star Break, things can get brighter as the Bucks try to make the playoffs for a third straight year in the franchise’s 50th season.
